Police called to false shooting call in Sebastian
Sept. 2, 2020 --Sebastian Police Department received a call this morning at 8:09 am about a shooting in the 800 block of Gilbert Street in Sebastian. The caller stated a male had shot his mother five times and he believed her to be dead. Sebastian Police Department, Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, and both departments SWAT teams responded to the call.
Police were able to clear the residence and found no one deceased inside. Three people were removed, 2 males and 1 female. All three were quite surprised by the police presence at their home.
This type of incidence is called “swatting”. Swatting is when someone calls 911 with a fake crime to get law enforcement to respond. This causes the police departments to send multiple units to a single location so if there were a legitimate emergency elsewhere, they would not be able to respond as quickly. This also requires a lot of time, money and resources.
Sebastian Police Department is now investigating the swatting call.
